Tailoring And Literacy
Women in southern Sudan and northern Uganda are trained to cook, clean, and be mothers, but in their society they are ill-equipped for income generation. Also, women are generally not given the chance to complete elementary school; the female literacy rate is appallingly low. We believe that literacy training is essential. Women need literacy skills to succeed in micro-enterprises and to be effective in serving their families and communities. Women also receive little or no health care, so the clinic is necessary for their health and the health of their families.
Mosaic supports Rabuna Fi's goal to proliferate self-reliance through income generating activities, tailoring and literacy training for women, and and free health care and health education through their clinic.
Women in the tailoring classes make thousands of pieces of clothing for orphans in northern Uganda and southern Sudan. At the completion of the program each woman receives a free sewing machine so she can begin her own tailoring business.
Mosaic has committed to supporting eight 6-month long classes of 15+ women to receive literacy and tailoring training in southern Sudan. Two classes are schedule for each year from 2008 to 2011.
